A must-visit place during your trip to Malacca is Seafood Street. Here, you can taste various seafood dishes, and I discovered a special menu. It is Bunga Raya Fried Radish Cake. I ordered it out of curiosity after seeing people waiting in long lines, but what did it taste like?
Popular menu of Malacca Seafood Street, Bunga Raya Fried Radish Cake
This shop located at the entrance of Seafood Street was always crowded with people. I wondered what was so popular, and it turned out to be because of the Fried Radish Cake. Many people were waiting to eat this food.
At first, I thought it was fried tofu, but it was actually fried rice cakes stir-fried in soy sauce. It was a unique combination of rice cakes fried in a rice cake shape and stir-fried with soy sauce. When I looked around, I saw that it was a popular menu for Chinese and Indian people.
The Bunga Raya Fried Radish Cake shop is located before entering the famous Seafood Street Food. Many people gather at this shop and wait to order this food. In conclusion, it was not my taste. I tried a similar dish sold at the Jonker Walker Night Market, but it was not my taste either. At first, I thought this dish was made with tofu, but it was made with rice cakes.
It is a dish made by making rice cakes, frying them, and stir-frying them with soy sauce. It was mainly served by Chinese and Indian people. The reason it did not suit me was because the soy sauce smell was too strong and the sauce was not to my taste. Also, I did not like stir-frying rice cakes like this. Rather, rice cakes with spicy Korean gochujang sauce, like tteokbokki, are closer to my taste.
Honest review by Jonesgo after tasting it
To be honest, it did not suit my taste perfectly. The soy sauce smell was too strong and the sauce was not my style, and the texture of the stir-fried rice cakes was not to my taste either. Personally, I like stir-fried rice cakes with spicy gochujang sauce like tteokbokki better. There are stir-fried tteokbokki with jjajang sauce in Korea, but it feels completely different from this restaurant. Only the color is the same.
The price is about 6 ringgit, which is not too much, but the portion is so big that it was hard to finish it all by myself. In the end, I left half and went back to the hotel.
Let's analyze this dish. If you pay about 6 ringgit, you can try this dish. Also, if you pay an additional fee, they will fry an egg and serve it. An Indian person who was waiting for this dish recommended it to me and said he enjoys this dish twice a week. And the portion is so big that I can't finish it all by myself. I was eating it by myself at the hotel and ate half and threw the other half away. It was too much.
This dish can be found not only in Malaysia but also in Singapore, and I have never seen it in Thailand or Vietnam. And not only this restaurant but also in John Walker Night Market, they say they put radish in it, but in my opinion, it feels more like chewing rice cake than radish, so I think I put in less radish than I thought. And most of all, the soy sauce sauce was too strong for me.
Why it captures the taste buds of various people
It was amazing to see people around me enjoying this food. In particular, one Indian person said that he eats this food twice a week. Also, this food is said to be easy to find in Singapore.
The good thing about this food is that it is well packaged so that you can eat it while it is hot, and it gives people who cannot enjoy this food like me a certain level of happiness to the point of feeling full, so I was able to introduce it to you. And since it is fried, I hope that those who like fried food or those who are traveling do not miss the opportunity to try a different kind of fried food.
Overall review and recommendation of JonesGo
The biggest advantage of this food is that it is well packaged so that you can eat it while it is hot. I think it will taste better if you eat it while it is warm. I recommend it to those who like fried food or those who want to experience a different kind of food while traveling.
However, the soy sauce is strong and the texture of the rice cake may be different, so please keep that in mind before ordering.
I have posted a more detailed review of this dish on my YouTube channel. You can see a vivid example of eating this dish in the Malacca Seafood Street Exploration video, so if you are curious, please visit.
