Hello, welcome to Jonesgo's travel blog! Today, I will tell you in detail about the representative transportation in Bangkok, Tuk-tuk, based on my vivid experience.
What is a Tuk-tuk Adventure?
Tuk-tuk is a traditional three-wheeled motorcycle taxi in Thailand. This unique transportation that can be easily seen throughout Thailand, including Bangkok, is popular among tourists.
Tuk-tuk can be used anywhere in Bangkok. I started from Mahakane Fortress, went through Democracy Monument, and went to Bangkok National Museum and Wat Arun. Of course, it is not a short distance, and since I have the opportunity to visit many places in Bangkok during the trip, it is definitely a trip that allows me to feel the local atmosphere better by using a Tuk-tuk than a taxi. Taxis are everywhere, right? And on the way back, I went through Rama X Palace, went back the way I came, got off at Chinatown Bangkok, and stopped by a Chinese seafood restaurant to finish the day with my friends for a fantastic dinner.
Experience using a Tuk-tuk in Bangkok
City Tour
When I was touring Bangkok with my friends, I used a tuk-tuk. We were able to see all the major attractions, and at the end, we tried to go to Wat Arun, but we had to walk because of the traffic. Fortunately, it was only a 3-minute walk.
I used a tuk-tuk twice. Once, I went on a tour around the city with my friends. At that time, we saw all the major attractions, and at the end, we tried to cross the bridge to get to Wat Arun, but there was a huge traffic jam on the Wat Arun side, so we had to walk, but it was only a 3-minute walk.
Another time, we used it to explore the Grand Palace of King Rama X and the night market on our way back. Since you can't park at the Grand Palace, I thought it was a really good idea to use a tuk-tuk instead of a taxi. The night market is an open-air tuk-tuk without windows, so the smell of the food at the night market is fantastic, and the atmosphere of the night market is conveyed as it is when you use a tuk-tuk. Overall, it was a great experience, and it was a happy trip that gave me a sense of satisfaction that I wondered how I could have traveled without a tuk-tuk.
Exploring the Grand Palace and Night Market
Another day, I took a tuk-tuk to explore the Grand Palace and Night Market of King Rama X. This experience was really great, and I don't think I would have been able to do this trip without a tuk-tuk.
Advantages of a tuk-tuk
- Available anywhere in Bangkok
- Multiple people can ride together
- Cheaper than a taxi
- Free to move along the route you want
- Enjoy the traditional feel
In my experience, I started from Mahakan Fortress and went to Democracy Monument, Bangkok National Museum, and Wat Arun. On the way back, I went through the Rama X Palace and got off at Chinatown and had dinner at a Chinese seafood restaurant.
In this way, you can tell the driver where you want to go with a tuk-tuk, and the advantage over a taxi is that you can decide on a final destination, tell him where you want to go, and it is cheaper than a taxi.
Comparison with Vietnamese cyclos and Tuk Tuk Adventure
Compared to the cyclos I experienced in Hanoi and Da Nang, Vietnam, tuk-tuks are much faster and more stable. This is because cyclos are pedaled by people, but tuk-tuks are powered by engines.
Comparing to services in other countries, when I was in Vietnam, there were cyclos in Hanoi and Da Nang. Of course, there were many more Hanoi cyclos than Da Nang. Since Hanoi cyclos are more popular, I will compare them.
Thailand's tuk-tuks are four-wheel drive, so they are much faster and more stable, and can be considered a substitute for taxis, but they are much cheaper than taxis and can be used by multiple people. Cyclos are limited to two people. And tuk-tuks have a somewhat traditional feel. On the other hand, Hanoi cyclos in Vietnam are much slower and have limited range because people ride bicycles to transport passengers. However, it is true that they have the advantage of moving slowly and allowing you to enjoy the surroundings more leisurely. If you want to travel longer distances in Vietnam, you have to use Grab to call a motorbike or taxi, which is a disadvantage. However, tuk-tuks are undoubtedly a great alternative to motorbikes or taxis.
Tips for using tuk-tuks
You negotiate the price before you ride a tuk-tuk. However, when I rode with my friends, the service was so good that I even tipped them. Please note that you can use it in other countries as well as Thailand.
- Negotiate the price before you ride
- Clearly state your destination
- Be careful with your belongings
- Tip for good service
Conclusion
Tuk-tuks in Thailand are not just a means of transportation, but a special experience that adds to the enjoyment of your trip. If you visit Bangkok, you should definitely try it! Lastly, what I felt while riding a tuk-tuk in Thailand was that I really liked the tuk-tuk service in Thailand overall.
