Why you need Malaysia Travel eSIM Guide
One of the most important things to consider when preparing for a trip to Malaysia is communication. If you can’t use the internet locally, everything from finding directions to searching for good restaurants and sharing precious moments on social media becomes inconvenient. In this case, an eSIM can be the best option. No matter what kind of trip you take, you need to be connected to the internet to use Google Maps and call a taxi with Uber or Grab, which is why you absolutely need to buy an eSIM.
In addition, you can use eSIM services in Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Macau, including Singapore, which is a strong advantage. If you are traveling to other countries I mentioned, not just Malaysia, please refer to this article.
I have included information on tips that no one knows about while traveling to Malaysia, so please read until the end! I think I may be the first person to introduce this information.
Buy an eSIM with the Traveloka app
I bought an eSIM with the Traveloka app for this trip to Malaysia. Whether it’s a short trip or a long trip, you can easily and quickly buy an eSIM through this app. The biggest advantage was that it could be used immediately upon arrival.
eSIM vs local SIM: Time and convenience comparison
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is really big. If you want to buy a SIM card after arriving, you have to walk a long distance, and it takes quite a long time considering the waiting time. Also, the airport is so big that you may not even know where to buy a SIM card, so you may end up exhausting your body and mind before you even start your trip.
Especially if you arrive late, you may not have time to buy a SIM card because you have to consider the hotel check-in time. This makes it really difficult to consider taking the subway, bus, or taxi to the hotel, but you cannot use the subway or bus if it is late, and you must bring a public transportation card to ride. (Please refer to the next post for purchasing a public transportation card.)
The center of Kuala Lumpur and the airport are very far apart, so you will definitely be confused when you arrive. Also, if you take a taxi, you have to use Grab, but if you do not have an internet connection, it will be really embarrassing if you check in late at the hotel. In times like these, you don’t know how convenient it is to have an eSIM purchased in advance.
Precautions when using eSIM: Wi-Fi connection required
The only downside to eSIM is that you need a Wi-Fi connection to activate it. However, this can be easily solved with just a little preparation. I’ll tell you easily. I’ll share my know-how.
Activating eSIM at Kuala Lumpur Airport
To share my experience, when I was getting off the escalator on the 3rd floor of the airport, I stopped for a moment on the 2nd floor and used the free Wi-Fi at Burger King right in front of the escalator. It only took a few minutes to scan the QR code I received by email and activate it.
One thing to note is that it is very difficult to find free Wi-Fi in downtown Kuala Lumpur. Even famous brands like Starbucks and McDonald’s that we know do not provide Wi-Fi in the city. Seriously! So I can’t say how fortunate I am to be able to use free Wi-Fi at the airport like this. Please take note.
Experience using eSIM in Malaysia Travel
I had to purchase it frequently because this trip was longer than expected. But I was satisfied because it was so convenient every time I used it. I bought a 5-day pass twice and a 3-day pass once.
I bought it in advance before arriving in Malaysia, and after arriving, I just had to turn it on in the data settings and I was able to use it right away. The price is cheap and it is convenient to use, so I was really satisfied.
Malaysia Travel eSIM purchase tips recommended
Purchase it in advance before you leave for your trip. It is convenient because you can use it right after you arrive.
Choose a data plan that fits your travel period. You can combine multiple plans like me.
Find out the Wi-Fi location at the airport in advance. For me, the easiest place to access is in front of Burger King on the 2nd floor of the airport.
Check your data usage and consider purchasing more if necessary.
Everyone, if you are preparing for a trip to Malaysia, definitely consider using an eSIM. In my experience, it is a great help in saving time and convenience while you are there. If you want more detailed travel tips, check out my YouTube channel, Jones Go. Please subscribe and like!
